Splendid Sizhuan: Bronze Green and Indigo Blue Reflecting Ancient Shu Civilization

Sichuan Province, dubbed the“Land of Abundance,” has long woven the word“splendid” into the fabric of its mountains and rivers. The term“Tian Fu” (Land of Abundance) first appeared in the Rites of Zhou, originally referring to an official post responsible for safeguarding the state’s treasury. Later, it was used to metaphorically describe places with favorable natural conditions, strategic terrain, and abundant resources. Surrounded by mountains on all sides and with a fertile plain stretching across its center, Sichuan has maintained its reputation as the“Land of Abundance” to this day.

【Bronze Green】

Bronze green refers to the typical color of verdigris which forms when metal like copper is oxidized. It is commonly seen on the surface of bronze artifacts. In the exhibition halls of the Sanxingdui Ruins, this touch of verdigris covers the contours of the bronze masks, intertwining with the light to create a hazy interplay of light and shadow.

【Plain Silk White】

Plain silk is white raw silk that had not been dyed or treated, often associated with imagery of purity and authenticity. At the Anyue Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center, under the interplay of light and shadow, the flowing robes of the 3D Purple Bamboo Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) appear light and graceful. With her legs crossed and feet bare, this lifelike statue is in a casual pose. 

【Ruddy Red】

Ruddy red, as rich as fine wine, symbolizes passion and vitality. The ancient study terrace was where the outstanding early Tang Dynasty (618-907) realist poet Chen Zi’ang read in his youth. Featuring red walls and black tiles, this ancient building seems as if reciting his poem“Climbing Youzhou Terrace” that still echoes today.

【Swallow Neck Blue】

Swallow neck blue is a color between cyan and blue, imbued with a touch of classical Eastern charm. On a night stroll above the Jinjiang River, amid the clear waves, the water reflects the eaves of Jiuyan Bridge and the warm lights along the shore, creating a serene and thought-provoking vista.

【Indigo Blue】

Indigo blue combines the calmness of blue and the elegance of purple, coupled with a sleek sense of modern industrialism. In the Chengdu International Railway Port Comprehensive Bonded Zone, rows of indigo blue containers are neatly arranged, carrying goods that connect Sichuan with the world.
